Coldwater Sophomore wins National Bowling Tournament.
Wes Steinecker a
sophomore at Coldwater High School won the USBC Pepsi Youth Championship held in
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The Pepsi Youth Championship is one of the premier
international tournaments for youth bowlers. This year it consisted of nearly
200 athletes from all 50 States, US Military Zones, Puerto and Canada competing
for a total of $20,000 in Scholarships.
The left-handed Steinecker competed
in an eight game qualifying round on Tuesday July 18 where he qualified in the
third position. Wednesday morning the top 16 players came back to compete in a
one game double elimination match play round. Wes went through the winner’s
bracket defeating four players, setting up the finals with Luc LeBlanc of
Trois-Ruisseuux, New Brunswick. Wes went on to win the final match 211 to
LeBlanc’s 193. Steinecker converted the 5-7 split in the ninth frame to propel
him to the title. He will receive a $2,000 scholarship for his efforts.
Wes qualified for the national
tournament by qualifying at his home center of Pla-Mor Lanes (Coldwater) in
January. He advanced to a district tournament in March which was held in
Napoleon. Bowling well enough to advance to the State tournament in Columbus in
May where he qualified in the third position giving him the opportunity to
travel to Florida. Wes rolled a career high game of 299 at the State tournament.
He is also a member of the Coldwater High School bowling team.
